Ingredients

 • 1 cup sugar
 • 1 cup water (for syrup), plus 4 cups cold water, divided
 • 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled
 • 1 cup fresh lemon juice (6–8 lemons)
 • ice cubes, for serving
 • lemon slices and strawberry halves, for garnish (optional)

Equipment

 • Small saucepan
 • Blender
 • fine-mesh strainer (optional)
 • citrus juicer
 • large pitcher
 • spoon

Method

 1. Heat sugar and 1 cup water in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring, until sugar dissolves, 3–4 minutes; cool 5 minutes.
 2. Blend strawberries with 1/2 cup cold water until smooth; strain if desired.
 3. Juice lemons to make 1 cup.
 4. Combine strawberry puree, lemon juice, syrup, and remaining water in a pitcher; stir.
 5. Taste and adjust sweetness; chill 30 minutes and serve over ice.

Notes

For seedless lemonade, strain both the strawberry puree and the lemon juice.

Adjust sweetness to taste — start with the full syrup and add more lemon if you like it tart.
